Course aims
Give a survey of linguistic aspects of translation and the devices used while translating between certain language pairs.
Brief description of the course
The course lectures on linguistic theories of translation departing from the fact that translating is an operation concerning language, and so the general theory of translation has to be concordant with linguistic theories. Beginning with J.S. Catford’s classical Linguistic Theory of Translation as an important step towards a coherent theory of translation, the course proceeds with dicussing the limits of translatability by separate units of translation focusing primarily on grammar as a closed system. The issues of translatability are viewed also within the context of cognitive linguistics. The course ends with discussing D. Robinson’s „Performative Linguistics“ enabling to treat more philosophical and recent linguistic problems as revealed in translation.
