Course aims
To provide the bases for the acquisition of competences in oral and written Spanish at the C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language.
In this course, the notions learnt in previous levels will be improved with the study of particular feautures of the language in order for students to be able to use a more specific and highbrow register of Spanish in every language skill. This will thus mean that the presence of current sociocultural events and interculturality will be the context offered to start working linguistic aspects of the language.
Brief description of the course
Each unit of the course will start with a written text presenting a context which is controversial in the current sociopolitical scene in Spain or any other Spanish speaking countries. Attention will be paid to new lexis, specially the one offering the students a higher register for their future compositions. A deeper study of each unit’s controversial contexts will be carried out through a video (short movie, documentary...) to work the oral comprehension. Next a new grammar notion will be studied and will also be linked to the kind of academic text that the students will have to produce (after analysing an example). The unit will end with an oral debate about the topic seen throught the unit.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student will be able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning, express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions, use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes, produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

The students will have broader command of different registers of the Spanish language, especially, in the academic field:

In the listening skills, the student will be able to understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly. They can understand television programmes and films without too much effort.

In the reading skills, the student will be able to understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style. They understand specialised articles and longer technical instructions, even when they do not relate to my field.

In spoken interaction, the student will be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes. They can formulate ideas and opinions with precision and relate their contribution skilfully to those
of other speakers.

In spoken production, the students will be able to present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects integrating subthemes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion.

In writing skills, the students will be able to express themselves in clear, well-structured text, expressing points of view at some length. They can write about complex subjects in a letter, an essay or a report, underlining what they consider to be the salient issues. They can select a style appropriate to the reader in mind.
