Course aims
Course examines the critical cultural, social and political moments that shaped Spanish civilization. Its main objective si to give the student an overview of Spain´s history: from the Moorish Conquest in the VIII century up to the XXI century; and analyze the major factors that had contributed to the formation fo Spain´s cultural heritage.
Brief description of the course
1. Muslim Spain (711-1492) In this part of the course will introduce the student into the history of the Muslim invasion.
2. Medieval Spain (to 1474) In this part will take into account the rule of the Visigoths and its downfall under the dominance of the Muslim empire, and the historical struggle that led Spain into a long war of Reconquest.
3. Monarchy and Empire (1474-1700) This part will analyze the new role Spain played in the world as it rose to the status of world power.
4. Spanish History from 1700. This part will analyze the last efforts made by the Spanish monarchy to maintain its status as a world power. It will study the consequences of Napoleon´s invasion.
5. 20th century. Following a period of growing political instability in the early twentieth century, in 1936 Spain was plunged into a bloody civil war. The war ended in a nationalist dictatorship.
