Brief description of the course
The course explores the theoretical and practical foundations of communication and text production by integrating communication models (e.g. Jakobson, Hymes) with the study of text genres and discourse analysis. It examines the characteristics of descriptive, narrative, and argumentative texts and their use in different contexts, such as journalism, academia, advertising, and literature. Particular attention is paid to critical discourse analysis from an ideological perspective, including self–other representations, the construction of authority, and the representation of time and space. Theoretical approaches are applied through practical and creative tasks, such as adapting academic texts for popular audiences, producing narrative functional texts, and completing an individual writing project in a selected genre. The course also addresses the purposeful and critical use of multimedia and artificial intelligence tools in the process of text creation.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the key concepts of communication and interaction and explains how they function in different communicative contexts;
- distinguishes between and analyses different text types and genres (e.g. descriptive, narrative, argumentative), taking into account their functions and contexts of use, critically analyses journalistic, academic, and cultural texts, identifying ideological and discursive meanings embedded within them;
- applies the key concepts and methods of text and discourse analysis in the interpretation of different types of texts, produces texts in a variety of genres, adapting language use, structure, and style to the purpose and target audience;
- mediates and transforms texts (e.g. from academic to popular science formats or from literary to functional texts), preserving their core content while adapting their form;
- uses multimedia and artificial intelligence tools purposefully, critically, and ethically in the processes of text production and analysis;
- works both independently and collaboratively and reflects on the development of their textual and communicative competence.
