Course aims
To give an overview of basic concepts in cultural studies and develop an ability to incorporate a cultural component in language and literature instruction.
Brief description of the course
Different models of culture learning (Hanvey, Hoopes, Brown, Bennett, Kim, Paige, Gochenour, Janeway, Byram). Basic concepts of intercultural communication: cultural identity; discourse, identity and intercultural communication; Self and the Other. Cultural constructs in education, media and literature. Problems in assessing intercultural communicative competence.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
By the end of the course a student
Has knowledge about the basic concepts of culture studies as well as the images of Self and the Other in different intercultural situations;
Is able to analyse cultural constructs in different contexts (media, literature, education) and solve the paradoxes of intercultural communication;
Is able to integrate theory in practice by presenting the required written tasks and receiving a positive graded pass on them.
