Course aims
This course introduces students to foundational topics in the lexical semantics, and brings together insights from a range of different perspectives.
Brief description of the course
The topics covered include: lexical units; lexical relations and lexical configurations; taxonomies; opposites and synonyms; countability, lexical semantics of predicative forms, verbs and thematic roles; lexical aspect (Aktionsart), aspectual classes and thematic role assignment; lexical semantics-syntax interface; lexical semantics and pragmatics.
There will be a number of assignments which involve using WordNet, FrameNet, network analyses of data. Some of the readings will be presented by students in class.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to analyse the structures of English (and other languages) which are challenging to the analysis of meaning; and have learned skills for exploring semantic interfaces with morphology and syntax in independent work.
