Course aims
To give a systematic overview of the history of American literature after World War I.
Brief description of the course
The impact of the two world wars on literature. The globalisation of culture. The influence of Freudism and existentialism on the public conscience. Various manifestations of modernism and postmodernism: the Lost Generation, the literary renaissance of the American South, beatniks, the impact of mass culture, science fiction, the historical and feminist novel, black humour, the flourishing of ethnic fiction.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
A grasp of American literary history in the 20th c.
Ability to compare literary processes in American literature with analogous processes in other literatures (e.g., British literature).
