Course aims
Getting acquainted with British literature of the 20th century. To look at the writings of the important exponents of the particular century or literary movement. Getting acquainted with the current state of British lit. (first decade of the 21st c.). Determining main tendencies and fields of defelopment.
Brief description of the course
Main literary methods: Modernism, Post-War British literature, Existentialism, trends and controversies of the 1960s and 70s: Postmodernism, Feminism, the experimental novel. The literature of the 1980s: the problem of history, Historiographic metafiction, postcolonial discourse, identity studies, ecocriticism. Main characteristic and representatives of the given methods. Newest tendencies and names.
The course consists of lectures and seminars. Independent study consists in reading the books from the list of obligatory reading and answering them individually in the form of a short essay (ca 1 A4 pg) on a topic provided by the lecturer.
Study methods: lecture, seminar, discussion, pair and group work.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
An idea of methods and trends in the 20th-21st century British literature. Placing the British literature in a wider cultural context. Development of analytical skills. Motivation for further research.
