Course aims
To get acquainted with peculiarities of art in 19-century England.
Brief description of the course
Main art styles and methods in the 19th c. up to the 1920s. Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism; Impressionism, Postimpressionism. Main representatives. Social factors: development of civilisation, industrialisation, growth of the Empire, development of science. The new level of mythological representations in 19th c art. Escapism. J. Ruskin’s art criticism; Millais, FM Brown, W. Morris. Pre-Raphaelites. Decadence, art nouveau. Aubrey Beardsley.
Landscape as one of the main subjects of the 19th c British art. Landscape as symbol of national identity; the conflict of nature and civilisation; Turner. Constable. GF Watts’s naturalism. Paul Nash’s surrealism. An ecocritical approach. Landscape and cityscape. Development of photography. Francis Bedford.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Ability to grasp general problems of 19th century British art and culture, connecting them to social and historical context, as well as to contemporary issues; familiarity with the work of most important artists, art critics and photographers of the era and their role in British culture; knowledge of art terminology in English; motivation for further research.
