Course aims
To give an overview of Irish literature, history and culture from the early Irish period to the 21st century; to develop an understanding of the relationship between Irish writing and its political, cultural and social background; to develop critical reading and writing skills.
Brief description of the course
This is a broad-based course which introduces students to a selection of Irish writers and identifies the main trends in Irish writing, locating them within the island’s history. Students will consider how Irish writing has been allied with historical interpretation and with political allegiance, and will examine specific texts in the wider social context out of which they came, exploring the continuities of the Irish past and the Irish present. There will be a particular focus on the issues of identity and belonging and the role of women in Irish society and writing.
Independent work includes: reading of literary texts, documents, and letters; seminar preparation and essay writing using selected articles and background texts.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student will have an basic knowledge of Irish culture and literary history, demonstrate an ability to discuss the work of an Irish author in relation to his/her context, and demonstrate an ability to perform a critical analysis of two or more texts and present findings coherently and convincingly – both orally and in writing.
