Course aims
To introduce one of the most influential approaches in modern syntatic theory, the generative approach, and its various theories on the basis of English and to illustrate and highlight in what ways the theories have influenced descriptive and pedagogical grammars of English.
Brief description of the course
The focus is on the most influential syntactic framework, the generative grammar and the topics under discussion are: the essence of generative grammar, Chomsky’s generative grammar (constituents, phrase structure rules, transformation rules, tree diagrams for representing structure, various transformation theories, including minimalism), lexical functional grammar (LFG), the similarities and differences between mapping (LFG) and transformation theories.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
After a successful completion of the course, the student is able to use and understand the relevant technical terminology and undertake syntactic analysis in the frameworks of the discussed syntactic theories.
