Course aims
Deeper knowledge of English literature in the 17th-18th century; developing analytical skills; ability to grasp general problems of literature and culture, connecting them to issues of life itself; motivation for further research.
Brief description of the course
Classics of the 17th century: J. Donne, B. Johnson, J. Milton. 17th century theology. Women in the 17th century: muses and masters. A. Lanyer. The image of Eve in Milton’s and Lanyer’s interpretation. Conclusions. Rise of science (Bacon, Hobbes). The Republic, change of power, stormy political processes and their reflection in literature. Writer as a man of state. Literary controversies (Milton, Dryden, Bunyan, Behn). Aphra Behn and the colonial policy. Beginnings of English classicism. Body and spirit in the writings of J. Swift. Conclusions.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Ability to grasp general problems of literature and culture, connecting them to issues of life itself; base for a deeper study of 19th-20th century literature. Motivation for further research.
