Brief description of the course
The course introduces key concepts such as culture, identity, language, place, and diaspora. It examines case studies from diverse Anglophone countries, addressing topics such as empire, migration, indigenous communities, colonisation, ecological issues, and cultural practices. Students work with textual and audiovisual materials, analyse media representation, and develop academic reading, writing, and research skills.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands key concepts used in the study of English-speaking cultures and applies them in case-study analysis;
- describes and contextualises selected cultural phenomena in English-speaking societies, relating them to broader processes;
- analyses cultural and media texts critically, distinguishing representation, interpretation, and factual information, and recognising bias;
- applies basic academic skills (formulating research questions, locating and evaluating sources, constructing arguments);
- communicates ideas orally and in writing using appropriate terminology;
- works collaboratively and reflects on learning and development.
