Brief description of the course
The course introduces English lexicology through digital and computational approaches, including corpus linguistics and digital lexicography. Topics include lexemes, morphemes, semantic relations, multi-word expressions, semantic change, and etymology. Students use digital lexical resources and corpus tools to investigate collocations, register variation, and discourse patterns in large datasets. The course develops skills in applying digital methods to the study of English lexicon and in critically evaluating language technologies in linguistic research.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains major concepts in English lexicology, distinguishing between words, lexemes, morphemes, and multi-word expressions;
- analyses lexeme-formation processes (compounding, derivation, blending, clipping) and semantic change, analyses semantic relations (synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, metaphor, prototype structure);
- identifies and explains major etymological sources of English vocabulary, including Germanic roots and loanwords from Celtic, Latin, Anglo-Norman French, Old Norse, and later contact languages
- evaluates how dictionaries, thesauri, corpora, and AI-based tools represent lexical knowledge, conducts searches in digital lexical resources to investigate lexical and semantic patterns;
- applies corpus-linguistic tools (collocation, frequency analysis) to authentic datasets;
- designs and carries out a small-scale corpus-based or digital lexical research project using appropriate tools and methods.
