Brief description of the course
The course introduces linguistic structure and its application to English-language texts. Topics include word classes, phrases, clauses, sentence types, descriptive vs prescriptive grammar, cohesion, coherence, theme-rheme structure, and syntactic relations. Principles of discourse analysis are applied to media, legal, business, non-fiction, and public-speech texts. Attention is given to rhetorical devices, stylistic features, and the relationship between syntax and discourse in shaping meaning and addressing audiences.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the difference between descriptive and prescriptive grammar and applies descriptive principles in text analysis;
- demonstrates knowledge of core syntactic categories (word classes, phrases, clauses, sentence types) and uses terminology accurately;
- analyses syntactic structure, textual cohesion, and information structure, identifying their functions and interrelations;
- applies discourse-analysis principles in critically analysing and comparing text types, considering rhetorical and stylistic features;
- distinguishes between English-language text types and supports analysis with terminology and examples;
- presents analytical results clearly in spoken and written academic English and reflects on analytical skill development.
