Brief description of the course
The course introduces English phonetics, morphology, intonation, and pragmatics, focusing on how sound, structure, and meaning interact in communication. Topics include phonemes, allophones, syllable structure, stress, connected speech, intonation, inflectional and derivational morphology, and interactions between phonology and morphology. The course compares British and American English sound systems and introduces core pragmatic concepts such as speech acts, politeness, and implicature. Students analyse spoken English and written representations of spoken discourse using appropriate linguistic terminology.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- defines core concepts and terminology of English phonetics and applies them in analysing spoken English;
- compares the sound systems of British and American English and identifies key differences;
- analyses English word structure, identifying inflectional and derivational processes;
- explains and analyses interactions between morphology and phonology (e.g. allomorphy, stress, i-mutation) and identifies pronunciation-based influences on word forms;
- describes major connected-speech processes (assimilation, elision, linking) and their effects on spoken English;
- identifies and describes key features of English intonation (tone units, nuclear stress, tone patterns), applies foundational pragmatic concepts (speech acts, politeness theory, implicature) to spoken discourse or written representations of spoken discourse.
