Course aims
Core subject. To give a systematic overview of the history of American literature from the Colonial period until World War I.

Brief description of the course
The history of American literature from the Colonial period until World War I. The American Dream. The role of the Frontier in the development of American mentality. Enlightenment. Romanticism. Transcendentalism. Realism. Naturalism.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge of the history of American literature, literary movements and methods (until the First World War). Ability to compare trends and processes in American literature with similar developments in other (e.g., British) literatures. Development of analytical skills. Motivation for further research.
