Course aims
The objective of the course is to create possibilities to acquire knowledge in the domain of Estonian cultural history. The objective of the course is to support the capability to understand the origin of the customs, beliefs and behaviour patterns existing in Estonian contemporary culture and to see their relations to Estonian cultural history.
Brief description of the course
The main problems and features of Estonian culture are tackled during the course, both from historical and from contemporary perspective. The connections of contemporary customs, beliefs and behaviour patterns with Estonian cultural history and various important source texts of Estonian culture are pointed out. The current position of Estonian cultural heritage is analyzed. The importance of arts in the development of cultural historial development is tackled. The role of Estonian culture in the process of creation and securing of Estonian national identity is analyzed both from historical and from synchronous perspective.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has the basic knowledge about Estonian culture and has acquired a framework to understand the meaning of it. The student is familiar with the most important events of Estonian cultural history and has acquired the knowledge about the important features and problems of Estonian culture.
- is able to see the connections of customs, beliefs and behaviour patterns existing in contemporary society with Estonian cultural history.
- is able to discuss the topics about Estonian culture individually and in groups and is able to present the results of her/his work clearly and logically.
