Course aims
To provide an overview of the system of Estonian lexicology and lexicography, to enrich vocabulary via practical work.
Brief description of the course
Branches and basic concept of lexicology. Origin groups of Estonian vocabulary and etymological studies. Social layers and functions of vocabulary. Vocabulary change and its enrichment. Meanings of word and their changes: polysemy, word combinations, metaphors. An overview of Estonian system of word formation. Relationship between word structure and meaning. Basic concept of derivation, derivational stem changes, semantic groups of affixes. Derivation and parts of speech. Compounding, stem and semantic changes in compounding. Compound and word combinations, problems of their correct usage. Basic concept of lexicography. Main types of dictionaries. Important dictionaries of the Estonian language.
