Course aims
To acquire necessary theoretical and practical skills for editing translated texts.
Brief description of the course
The characteristics of editing translated texts: relationships between the translated and original languages, authors style and differentiation of foreignisms as well as translation errors and avoiding them. Different texts with more complicated content are edited. In addition to language editing skills students learn to work with terminology, use functionally adequate vocabylary and functional style. Lecturer gives a personal assessment and/or publishes excample text on web. Students are required to have excellent knowledge of Estonian and knowledge of English that enables them to understand the original.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the characteristics of editing of translated texts, recognises the influence of a foreign language on Estonian texs and is able to avoid it;
- is familiar with additional materials necessary in editing process;
- can evaluate the functional and terminologycal adequacy of the translated text;
- evaluates the translated texts and based on practical work writes a paper about most common mistakes in English-Estonian translations.
