Brief description of the course

To deepen the learner’s knowledge of the underlying structures of the language. To develop the learner’s language proficiency to a level that enables the comprehension of complex texts, the delivery of detailed presentations and arguments, and to establish the foundations for attaining linguistic competences at the C1.1 level, as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

A Finnish language proficiency level of B2.2 is required to participate in the C1.1 course.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- communicates fluently and spontaneously in Finnish without excessive searching for words, recognizes the differences between spelling and pronunciation, and understands prosodic features;
- pronounces the language correctly for the most part;
- writes grammatically correct texts in Finnish, using a broad vocabulary and constructions characteristic of standard written language;
- understands extensive and complex texts and is able to analyze them;
- understands and is able to retell authentic spoken texts (e.g. dialogues, radio programmes, television news, etc.);
- knows the rules of Finnish orthography, e.g. the use of compound sentences and pronouns, and has a good command of the key grammatical concepts in Finnish.
