Course aims
To learn about and analyze phenomena important in contemporary Finnish society and culture. Get acquainted with the main positions in Finnish politics, to learn to orientate in sources that analyze social events (media) and look for different perspectives. Support Finnish language skills.
Brief description of the course
The political landscape of Finland. Regional specificities. National minorities of Finland in the past and today (Sámi, Finno-Swedish, new immigrants, etc.). Finnish nature and its role in Finnish identity. Traditional and pop culture. Historical development and contemporary of Finnish film (Kaurismäki, Harlin).
Supporting the acquisition of the Finnish language at B2.2 level and the acquisition of sectoral vocabulary as the course is in Finnish.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a thorough knowledge of contemporary Finnish society and culture;
- can link knowledge with the wider general cultural and societal context;
- can write independent research in Finnish and present its results.
