Course aims
To enabale a general understanding of the acquisition of Finnish as a second and foreign language, principle concepts, main theories, approaches and essential research questions, methods and results. To enable understanding and analyzing the acquisition and learning processe of Finnish in the light of previous experience; to enable further sucessfull acquistion of Finnish as L2 didactics.
Brief description of the course
An overview of the acquisition of Finnish as a second and foreign language, main concepts, theories, approaches and essential research questions, methods and results, factors affecting learning results of Finnish, learner’s strategies, assessment of language proficiency, cross-linguistic influence; connections between acquisition theories and teaching methods; possible application of research results in teaching; excursions to secondary schools Finnish classes.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The students have knowledge of essential concepts in Finnish as a second and foreign language and its connections with SLA-research; skills to draw connections between theorectical concepts and experience of language learning/teaching; skills to use acquired knowledge for development of individual language skills and language learning and to conduct research in SLA field; basis for further studies in teacher training MA programs.
