Course aims

To provide a possibility to develop skills of correct and fluent written language usage. To consciously improve proficiency in Estonian as a mother tongue in all its text types.

Brief description of the course

Text and it’s formal characters. Coherence inside the sentence and inside the text. Strategies of text formation. The structure of the text. Main types of texts according to communication aims: descriptive, narrative, arguing, decomposing and directing type of text. Main types of texts according to culturally traditional language usage: the language of fiction, media, speciality, colloquial language.
Usage of sources of linguistic self-supervision (dictionaries, grammar textbooks, information from the Internet, linguistic advice) is practised, attention is given to common problems of style and correct usage of language.
Common errors of expression in practical official usage and disadvantages arising when taking foreign texts as examples (e.g. in studies) are brought out. Sentence formation skills as well skills for avoiding foreign constructions and word order in everyday texts will be developed.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- can express her/himself fluently and correctly in written texts;
- knows main requirements of official language usage;
- can use sources of linguistic self-supervision.
