Course aims

This course will provide basic knowledge of classical Chinese for the better use of modern Chinese.

Brief description of the course

During the course, 12 classical Chinese texts will be introduced, most of which are stories about idiomatic phrases and ancient fables, with vivid and interesting plots. In each lesson, there are 3 to 4 items of "Classical Chinese for Modern Use" through which the value of classical language is demonstrated; 2 to 4 grammar points to differentiate the ancient and current language usage and to cultivate the students’ feeling for ancient Chinese; two Chinese character radicals to help improve students’ skills of reading characters as well as passages; and one short article on Chinese culture or language to lead students into a broad world of learning.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
Upon successful completion of the course the student
• understands the development and background of Chinese idioms and is able to shortly describe it
• is able to differentiate ancient and modern usage of Chinese language
• understands better the meanings of radicals of Chinese characters.
