Course aims
The course provides students with a solid understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives in documentary filmmaking.
Brief description of the course
The course provides a viewpoint to the theory of documentary cinema. It features descriptions and analysis concerning the evolution of the documentary film and different approaches engaged in producing films with a focus on diverse cultural, social, and historical subjects. Modes and styles of documentary are analyzed. A specific theme of history and memory of documentary is introduced and practicised. Also moral and ethical questions are related to the topics studied during the course.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can explore and research the reciprocal relationship of theory of documentary film;
- understands and respond critically to the role and potential of documentary film;
- can write and apply critically and creatively the analysis of the relationship between sounds and images of documentary film;
- can organize ideas and visual material creatively in the form of written / visual essay;
- can construct a clear and imaginative argument on the theory of documentary.
