The purpose is to provide the theoretical knowledge about historical developments, defining features and specifics of documentaries. Also to develop students’ analyzing skills and critical approach to non-fiction films.
Brief description of the course
This course is designed as an introduction to creative documentary. Screenings of internationally celebrated films in history, and also of Estonian films are included. Through viewing and analysing numerous films, the students will acquire knowledge about the historical developments, defining features and specifics of documentaries. Exploring the complexities of these films also helps to develop creative skills and a critical approach to non-fiction films. Students’ independent work is to write the analyses and essays.

Learning outcomes in the course
Students have acquired the theory and concepts of historical developments, defining features and specifics of documentaries.
The analyses about the films are written during the course. The course will end with the written exam.
Grading criterea: „A“ - outstanding and exceptionally thorough achievement of the learning outcomes, characterized by the knowledge and capacity to use the acquired on exceptionally high level.
„B“ - achievement of learning outcomes on a very good level, characterized by omitting knowledge without any principal mistakes.
„C“ - achievement of learning outcomes on a good level, capacity to use knowledge purposefully. Minor flaws and inconsistencies appear in more specific and detailed knowledge.
„D“ - level of achieving the learning outcomes is sufficient. A degree of shortage in knowledge is noted.
„E“ - meeting the learning outcomes on a minimum level, capacity to use knowledge in limited ways. Notable shortage in knowledge and in confidence is noted.
„F“ - student has acquired knowledge on a level lower than required.
