Course aims
- to understand the variety of institutional arrangements and fundamental goals of criminal law in the transnational environment;
- to develop the knowledge of the student of transnational legal rules relevant to criminal law in the digital environment.
Brief description of the course
This course will examine the fundamental principles of transnational criminal law, with special focus on the digital environment. It is designed to accommodate students both with and without prior knowledge EU law and criminal law. Students will gain an understanding of how the EU legal systems transposes international laws and how national and EU systems ensure EU rules are applied in context.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is aware of key transnational legal instruments and institutions relevant to criminal law in the digital environment;
- is able to apply specific legal rules to a hypothetical case;
- has an understanding of the historical development transnational criminal law and understand that different jurisdictions may arrive at different solutions to similar cases;
- has an understanding of the key types of jurisdiction rules applicable to criminal law in the transnational environment.
