Course aims
- to create the basis for understanding the Continental European legal culture by introducing Roman Law (ius Romanum) and one of its branches – private law (ius privatum) – which was in force from VIII century B.C until VI century;
- to create the opportunity to develop knowledge regarding Roman Private Law (ius privatum) and the connections with modern law;
- to create the preconditions for understanding in-depth the modern legal system through the historical context;
- to develop skills of working with legal literature and legislation.
Brief description of the course
The course will cover the general issues of the Roman law, along with specific institutions of private law: persons, property law, obligation law, family law, inheritance law and civil procedure.
At the same time Latin legal terminology will be introduced.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a substantive overview of the branches of Roman law and the development of legal institutions;
- understands and is able to explain the main legal institutes covered in the course;
- knows and is able to explain the main principles of Roman law and the Latin terms which the lecturer highlighted in lectures.
