Course aims
To provide an opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to write an appellate brief and present an oral argument to an appellate court through participation in moot court.
Brief description of the course
Writing the appellate brief: selecting issues for appeal; standard of review; choosing arguments in support of an issue; ordering issues; format of an appellate brief; questions presented; the statement of the case; summary of the argument; point headings; synthesizing the law and precedents from your client’s perspective; arguing your facts; rebutting opposing arguments and authority; writing the conclusion; proper citation format.
Oral argument: preparing and selecting the arguments; questions by the court; citation of authority; speaking style; prayer for relief.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has the basic knowledge and skills to present a case on appeal to an appellate review court, including writing a brief and participating in an oral argument before a panel of judges.
