Course aims
To provide the students with basic information about Baltic German ways of life and identities after 1939 in Estonia, Latvia and Germany.
Brief description of the course
The lectures outline Baltic German ways of life in Estonia and Latvia under German and Soviet occupation, in Nazi- and post-war Germany and within the Baltic states after independence in 1991. In the seminars will be discussed the meaning of occupation, flight and relocation for the construction of Baltic German identities in the context of German and Estonian histories and societies.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
After the course the student:
- will know the main political, social and cultural facts of Baltic German life after 1939
- is able to reflect on the main factors of Baltic German identity building process and its importance in post-war Estonia and Germany
- knows the names of the most important Baltic German scientists, artists, associations, archives, museums and libraries after 1939
- is aware of the importance of politics, generations and other factors for the construction of Baltic German identity after WWII
- knows how to use oral history
- can verbalize his/her knowledge and analytical statements in a clear and grammatically correct form in written and spoken language
- is proficient in the style and language used in research.
