Course aims
Overview of development of western civilization from the beginning of it up to the fall of Western-Rome on 5th century. The following areas will be covered: political history, society and statehood, religion and culture.
Brief description of the course
History of ancient countries of the East: overview of sources, ancient empires of the East, their grand culture and its place in world history. Ancient Greece: historical sources and cultural heritage. Historiography of Hellenism. Crete and Mycenae. Achaea and Greece. Period of Homer. Archaic Greece. Classical Greece. Conquests of Alexander the Great. Hellenistic culture. Ancient Rome. Sources and historiography. Early republican period. Civil wars. Early imperial period. Roman Empire. Christian Church. Demise of Western Rome. Eastern Roman Empire.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student will know the main cultures and states of the Ancient world, and can specify the main stages of their development. Will be able to name the principal sources or source complexes for each civilisation or historical period, will characterise them and understand the possibilities offered by them for reconstructing the history as well as their limitations. The student will possess the principal terminology concerning each civilisation or historical period. He/she will be able to name the most important contemporary research traditions concerning the history of the Ancient World, and will be able to demonstrate his/her ability to find and critically interpret the evidence.
